HOW TO LIFT AND MOVE EQUIPMENT

When lifting equipment, you shouldn’t use your back. You should bend your knees and squat down, and once you’ve got hold of the equipment you’re moving, you should stand back up pushing with your legs. Make sure you can see and get where you’re going safely and once you’ve got it where you want it, put it down the same way you picked it up.

FIRE AND EVACUATION PROCEDURES

Before a performance, you should make the audience aware of the fire escapes and assembly point in case of a fire. If a fire did happen, you should calmly point out the nearest fire exits and ask all the audience to make their way to the assembly point where you will meet.

RISK ASSESSMENT

RISK WHAT TO DO
Wires (tripping) tape wires to floor
Electrical equipment Make sure all equipment is set up safely, know where fire extinguishers are in case of emergency
Fire Make all performers and audience aware of the nearest fire exits and assembly point before performance.
Covid Keep doors open for ventilation, ask people to wear masks

HAS THE MUSIC INDUSTRY DIED?

I don’t think that the music industry has ‘died’ but it has changed a lot in the last few years. Starting with streaming services like spotify, apple music etc.  these have affected how artists release and earn money off music, but also how people listen to music. It makes it harder for musicians to make a living off their music as the pay from these services are so low. Especially if they’re under a record label, they’re essentially getting nothing. Record labels are also far less popular now that there are distributers that will release music, while allowing musicians to keep the rights to it, and usually earn all the money they make, depending on the deal. With services like spotify, musicians can actually release the music their selves without any outside help if they wanted to, this may be a good way for musicians who already have a large following and can promote it themselves.

With covid, there has been a massive change in live music. Artists have had to do live streams, making it harder for some to make money, who may have used things like Instagram live to perform. This may have brought in a lot more people, but they wouldn’t have made much money, other than the occasional gift from a fan, or possible sponsorships. Other bigger artists, like Billie Eilish may have benefitted more when they used a private livestream with a code access to do a concert, she was able to do this because she has a lot of fans, and may have even made her more due to no venue, lighting and crew expenses etc.

PERFORMANCE EVALUATION

This unit is to show how I would prepare for and put on a performance as a professional musician.

I think that the set list was well organised, and it made the songs easy to run through and created a smooth performance. There was a big range of ensembles and songs, that all had different set-up both on the stage and for the sound desk. Because of this, we had to communicate with the sound technician to do sound checks (individually and with the band) to make sure the levels are all right for everyone’s performances.

Overall, I think the performance went well. There was a range of different genres, and all the songs ran smoothly through. We worked on the lights for some of the songs, just using the lighting desk. For example in Breezeblocks, we did more mellow lighting to fit the song, as it wouldn’t look right if there were bright flashing lights, as it wouldn’t fit the mellow feeling of the song.

I sang Dani California by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. I was filling in for someone who had covid, so I was only able to practice with the band twice before the performance. I think the first half went well, I felt quite confident and comfortable singing, but I feel like I didn’t do very good on the bridge and it made me less confident and I started struggling towards the end of the song. If I could do it again I would want to rehearse it more with the band, especially the bridge, because I found it quite hard to sing as I haven’t been able to practice it much.  Being that I learned the song the day before the performance, I fell like it went well, it definitely could’ve been better if I’d had longer to practise it to get the higher parts of the song.

I think with everything that I’ve learned in this unit, I would be much more prepared to put on a professional performance in a safe manner.
